Industrial Hearing Screening

Extended exposure to elevated noise levels can result in substantial hearing damage, representing a critical concern for industrial workers and individuals regularly subjected to high noise environments in their professional settings.

Hearing damage from noise exposure is preventable when appropriate precautions are established early. Regular hearing screenings to identify early signs of hearing loss, combined with daily preventive measures such as proper ear protection, are crucial for preventing permanent hearing damage.

Industrial Hearing Test Requirements

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has implemented requirements and procedures for hearing conservation to standardize safety practices and minimize preventable hearing damage. Numerous states maintain additional guidelines, as does the Department of Defense.

OSHA typically mandates that employees exposed to a time-weighted average (TWA) of 85 dB participate in a hearing conservation program incorporating regular hearing testing and employee education. Industrial facilities must also report evaluation results. Official hearing conservation standards are detailed in OSHA CFR 29 1910.95 & MSHA Part 62.

Industrial Hearing Conservation Programs

While some companies manage these requirements internally, most opt to collaborate with specialized hearing conservation companies to conduct evaluations, maintain records, and ensure compliance with all safety standards and objectives.

Failure to test and report noise exposure levels and their impact on employees can result in substantial legal expenses and federal penalties. Partnering with professionals to ensure complete compliance represents a valuable investment for long-term success.

Hearing conservation companies typically operate mobile evaluation units that travel to perform on-site hearing screening services. These units are staffed by hearing specialists and/or Occupational Hearing Conservationists (OHC, also known as Industrial Audiometric Technicians).

OHC Technicians obtain certification from the Council of Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) and operate under the supervision of hearing specialists or physicians. They receive specialized training to conduct hearing conservation procedures, including pure-tone air conduction hearing testing. Their training is specifically designed for occupational settings and doesn't apply to non-occupational practices.

Education and Referrals

OHC Technicians are trained to identify potential early signs of hearing loss and provide employee education. When potential hearing problems are detected, technicians refer employees to hearing specialists for further evaluation.

Basic employee education and training typically covers proper fitting and use of hearing protection devices. Some employees may require more advanced, customized hearing protection solutions. Employers may also need to implement environmental modifications.

OHC technicians aren't qualified to independently evaluate hearing conservation program effectiveness or conduct noise surveys and analyses. More qualified professionals are needed to design programs that meet specific company requirements.

Hearing evaluations are essential for maintaining safe industrial work environments. Each company needs to find industrial hearing testing solutions that work effectively for their specific situation.
